This springs weather has been nothing short of crazy. Early spring had us wondering where the rains were and then we are praying for the winds to stop. The temperatures have been all over the board, and have been playing games with the ocean temps. This may make for tough fluke fishing, but it has been a blessing for the stripers, and if this un seasonable cooler weather sticks around, its feeling like we will continue to be banging bass well into July. Our waters here are normally over 80 in the rivers on July 4th but we are still barely crackin 60.

With all this crazy weather, we are switching between our boat and if we cant get out front, breaking the kayaks out and hitting the backwaters. We get to spots that even our shallow draft Jones cant get too. Talk about up close and personal fishing.


Its been bass and blues of all shapes and sizes since early April. Booking trips has been easy, but keeping the dates intact is another. The weather sneaks in and wrecks everything, can we please just have a few days of stability?

Trying out a new RANGER kayak size landing net. Its got a rubberized net material, cool bucket type shape and a telescopic handle. Have to say that without a good net, your chances of actually landing some fish, especially flapping fluke are greatly decreased. This net material is hook resistant and perfect for catch and release since the coating doesn't effect the fishes slime coat.

Empire Wind 1- A Fish Factory in the Making

Local boat-based fishermen from Northern New Jersey (Think Raritan Bay) and Western New York (Think Jamaica Bay) will soon have 54 new fishing hotspots to explore. Empire Wind 1 and Empire Wind 2 is a “pizza slice” shaped offshore wind lease area,   located 13 miles south of Jones Beach, New York, and 19 miles east of Long Branch New Jersey. It is wedged between the shipping channels, with the tip  near  the infamous offshore hotspot known as the “Cholera Bank”. This project has been in the works for a while, since 2017, when the lease was awarded, and continues to move forward.    Empire Wind 1 (EW1) was one of the first wind energy areas to enter the multi-year process in the Bight.  It will be supported locally at the first New York-based “wind port” in South Brooklyn, transforming the South Brooklyn Marine Terminal (SBMT) into an offshore wind hub. Illegal trawlers fishing right off New Jersey coastline

The amount of fishing misinformation out there on social media is enough to make me crazy and inspired this blog post. Take a deeper dive into the world of offshore wind power with me and learn more about what these weird-looking ships are and why they are there. These ships may be big and weird-looking, but I assure you they aren’t “Chinese trawlers” or “Omega Bunker boats” netting up millions of pounds of fish. In fact, there isn’t a single fish hook or net onboard. They are Research vessels hired by offshore wind developers to perform surveys of the ocean floor on the coming windfarms. This is all part of the planning process to explore not only the actual turbine locations but all the cable routes.
